esXpress utilises the Virtual Backup Appliance or VBA. VBAs are simply the fastest and most secure way to backup your virtual machines without affecting console resources or virtual machine availability. VBAs are small virtual machines that backup other virtual machines. Unlike dedicated hardware solutions, VBAs are cost effective, and scale with your environment. And because of their distributed nature, VBAs are completely fault tolerant, very low impact, and yet yield incredibly fast speeds.

VBAs make esXpress the only backup solution that scales vertically as well as horizontally. This is because VBAs allows esXpress v3.1 to run multi-threaded across multiple hosts, making it as much as 10 times faster than proxy backup solutions.

And VBAs make esXpress v3 the most flexible backup product now allowing for multiple transport protocols and targets including; ftp, ssh, smb/cifs, iSCSI, SAN, local storage and more.
